Connect VS Code to StackTether
Short answer: add https://app.stacktether.com/api/mcp as an HTTP MCP server in VS Code (in mcp.json), start it, and approve on the StackTether page that opens. VS Code needs two switches on under AI access: VS Code (sign-in through vscode.dev) and Local apps on a tech's computer.
Steps
- Ask an admin to switch on both apps above.
- In VS Code, add an MCP server of type HTTP with the connector address. Microsoft's guide: Use MCP servers in VS Code.
- Start the server. VS Code opens a sign-in through vscode.dev and a StackTether page.
- Sign in with password and 2FA, then click Approve.
Known limits
- VS Code runs on your computer, so it follows local-app rules: approvals last 7 days and the country list applies.
- VS Code sometimes signs in through a local address on a port that is already busy and then picks a different port. StackTether's sign-in server matches the registered address exactly, so the sign-in can fail. Close other VS Code windows and try again, or remove and re-add the server.
- Your organization's GitHub Copilot policy may block MCP servers.
