Connect Claude Code and other local apps
Short answer: apps that run on your own computer share one switch, Local apps on a tech's computer (Claude Code, Cursor, VS Code, ...), under AI access. For Claude Code, run claude mcp add --transport http stacktether https://app.stacktether.com/api/mcp. For other apps, add a remote MCP server with the same address. A browser page opens: sign in to StackTether with 2FA and click Approve.
Steps for Claude Code
- Ask an admin to switch on Local apps.
- In a terminal, run:
claude mcp add --transport http stacktether https://app.stacktether.com/api/mcp - Start Claude Code and authenticate the StackTether server when prompted (for example with the
/mcpcommand). Your browser opens StackTether. - Sign in and click Approve on Connect an app on your computer to StackTether?. The page shows the app as Your computer and the local port it sends you back to.
Other local apps
Cursor desktop, Codex, Gemini CLI, MCP Inspector and similar apps: add a remote (HTTP) MCP server with the connector address and complete the sign-in in your browser.
How local apps are protected
- The switch is labelled "Less restricted: can connect from any network", because these apps call from wherever your computer is.
- Approvals last 7 days, then the app asks again.
- Admins are emailed when a tech's local app calls from a new network or country.
- Your MSP can limit local apps to a list of countries, with travel overrides for techs on the road. See AI access.
FAQ
"Your MSP only allows apps on your computer to connect from certain countries..."
You are calling from a country that is not on your MSP's list. Ask an admin for a travel override.
Approval keeps failing after a restart.
Some apps pick a new local port each time. StackTether's sign-in server matches the registered address exactly, so remove the server in the app and add it again to register the new port.
